HUGHES CARPORT

I wasn’t sure what I wanted in my carport, but I knew what I hated: flimsiness, visible bracing, bolts, mixed materials, Zincalume. Visible from the house, it had to fit in a specific area allowing a precious tree to flourish. Robert and his team devised a pared-back form comprising four corner columns supporting a low pitch roof hidden behind horizontal beams, its roof designed so the wind clears it of leaves and water runs off in a precise stream. It’s a piece of dark grey sculpture, monumental yet gentle, strong and honest, that enhances our block and our life. Perfection.
